The effectiveness of training depends in part on the quality of its content.
But what's the point of spending hours refining your project if in the end the learners drop out and don't remember much? You are indeed missing an ingredient that only neuropedagogy can provide. Discover how to integrate neuropedagogy into your training program step by step.
What is neuropedagogy?
Neuropedagogy provides a better understanding of the memorization mechanisms of the brain to adapt training and enhance the effectiveness of learning.
This discipline is composed of three main branches:
● Neurosciences – study of all knowledge and research on the nervous system;
● Psychology;
● Pedagogy.
Since this subject fascinates you so much, we invite you to discover the reasons that arouse such enthusiasm around neuropedagogy.
Why combine neuropedagogy and training?
As we have seen above, the quality of the content will not be so decisive if the information is not well structured and disseminated.
The human “computer” (the brain) is the most incredible machine of all time. It took millions of years for us to have a mind of such scope today.
You're probably wondering where I'm coming from?
As a good instructional designer, our ultimate goal is that our learners can perfectly assimilate the content of a training and put it into practice in the process.
This shows the importance of exploring brain functioning in a learning situation in order to facilitate the integration of information.
In addition, neuropedagogy can be the ad hoc tool to counter the problem of infobesity which continues to wreak havoc. The web has become a shambles and not everyone can digest the astronomical mass of data.
What should basically be useful for stimulating cognitive faculties loses all meaning.
We must not just create content, but find solutions that make people want to learn. Many trainers jump into the creation on a whim, when they themselves don't know how to ensure that the information is not diluted in the minds of the learners.
An upgrade is in order!
4 key principles of neuropedagogy for easy and successful learning
- Clearly define your objectives and communicate them
"He who has no goal is unlikely to achieve them", Sun Tzu.
To properly prepare the content of your training, it is important to correctly define the objectives of the training program.
Far be it from me to push an open door, but less than 20% of instructional designers clearly set their objectives.
The taxonomy of objectives is a recognized way to classify them into several categories. In short, it is a question of breaking down your overall objective into 4 partial objectives and structuring it in relation to these contents.
Above all, be careful not to add elements so as not to overload the course cognitively.
Setting goals is one thing. You must then communicate it to position your subject well and that your learners find themselves in what you are teaching them. It will also allow them to record the information needed to help them achieve the course goal.
- Respect the human cognitive load
This is an essential point!
Short-term memory (MCT) is one that allows you to retain a limited amount of information in a relatively short time, has a duration of about 18 seconds.
Your content must therefore be designed to respect the cognitive load of humans. The goal is to bring the training content into the learner's short-term memory in such a way that it can easily be transferred to long-term memory.
Your mission as a responsible trainer is to reduce the learner's cognitive load as much as possible.
To facilitate the learning of your training, here are some tips:
● Limit the text present on the screen to 5 items, 7 maximum;
● Use clear and attractive visuals, rather than bulleted lists;
● Favor short formats;
● Work on the training according to a timing of about ten minutes per content, and punctuated by breaks.
- Involve the learner by creating emotion around the content
Regardless of the format used for training, it's all about emotions.
Would you like to listen to someone who speaks in a monotonous voice? But if its content is perfect, would that be enough?
Several solutions are possible to increase the attention of the target audience and improve the retention of information.
Using storytelling captures attention and engages them emotionally. Or, offer a lively and dynamic training by offering the possibility
